We just got back from Barcelona Fashion Week and we're excited to share all the great finds and beautiful clothes.
Though the event was great we always love exploring the streets and seeing what we can find... and this time we found a goldmine! Not only were we there just in time for all the reducciones (SALES), we found El Delgado Buil, an awesome little shop/atelier for beautiful designers Macarena and Anna. Though they seen to be already creating quite a buzz in Europe, we were pleased to be one of the first ones in America to discover them (come in to Toucan Boutique today to see some of their things we brought back). The designers maybe lovely and quiet, but the clothes speak loudly of their love for all things modern but pretty, with interesting prints and delicate fabrics.

While there, we also had a chance to fit in an art opening at Gracia Arts Project, a great gallery with an awesome concept and a diversified collection of artists.

Here is a little peek at what's coming to Toucan soon... As you know we just got back from Sao Paulo Fashion Week and we are so excited to share what we found there with you all. In the next few days, I'll post some of the awesome brands we discovered and some of the items we liked.
Since it's summer, we'll start with 3am, a young brand started by three friends who decided to join forces and create a line of bikinis, clothing and accessories (each girl is responsible for one element). Everything is fresh, innovative and super high quality and comfortable. The accessories are funky, the clothing is modern and the bikinis feel INCREDIBLE -- trust us, they feel so light, you'll have to look down to see if you're really wearing anything.

Braving the Snow at Crytal Couture

Last night was the second night of Crystal Couture and though the weather outside was frightful, we had a great time. Again, there was some great body painting, lots of local boutiques showing their best, but there was also a T-shirt competition featuring designs by local artists. For our runways show this time Toucan Boutique decided to focus on separates and Redley and Skunk were a major success. Check out some of the photos and we hope see you all there again tonight!

First Day at Crystal Couture

There were models with animal body paint, lots of interesting prints on the runway and everyone had a great time in spite of the cold. I've always adored Isaac Mizrahi and was thrilled to find out that he was responsible for the first lady looking so great at the State of the Union address. I like the textures of the dress and the plum looks great on her skin. I always want to see more from Mizrahi and am happy he's back at full force.

Sao Paulo Fashion Week is closing and creative director Paulo Borges is expressing concerns over the extremely thin models walking the shows.

"We have noticed with concern that some models on our catwalks -- often the most booked -- are extremely thin. These Brazilian girls are based most of the year in Europe and in the USA where they work majorly," Paulo Borges, the creative director of the Sao Paulo Fashion Week, said in a statement.

He issued the warning after seeing models fly in to parade in this week's Brazilian fashion event and stressed he and the other organizers were intent on "preventing extreme health problems among these professionals."

Brazil already has some restrictions on models ages and requires health reports, but he thinks more should be done.

"We would like to propose a joint effort towards minimizing this issue and preventing the effects of this trend on models, on our industry and on society itself,"

So last night was another night filled with fashion shows and the search for some new vendors. Though it was hard to take the heat on the second day of Rio-a-Porter without any air conditioning, we saw some new great things from Skunk, Eclectic and Anna Marcolina.
But the highlights were definitely Acquastudio and Maria Bonita Extra's fashion shows. Acquastudio showed some great -- and rarely seen on Rio's runways -- couture show with some beautiful architectural pictures. And Maria Bonita Extra might have had some great clothes, but what I really remember was the live band who kept the huge crowd, press and celebrities entertained.

Third night of Fashion Rio

So it's our second night at Fashion Rio and it's been a little hard to think about winter collections when it's a beautiful sunny 97 degree day outside. We are glad though that the set-up of the shows and showrooms is a little different this year, with both being at the same venue is a lot easier and quicker to take it all in.
On our first night we got to see a condensed version of all the vendors in a 35 minute long runway show where they each showed one piece. And we are happy to report that next winter will be full of prints and bright accents and we love Brazil for not letting us drown in a see of black when the weather is grim enough.
Tomorrow will be the real test when we get a chance to look at each collection, but we have a feeling we'll find many new exciting things.

February 1 – 6, 2010

CRYSTAL CITY, VA — Crystal City is poised to join the ranks of top fashion destinations along with Milan, Paris and New York City. For one week in February, Crystal City will be the center of fun and fashion during the second annual Crystal Couture. Building on the success of last year’s similar event, The Crystal City Business Improvement District will turn available retail space into an exotic runway, boutique and night club – featuring trunk shows, live theater, DJs, specialty drinks, food, comedians, dancing and more.

Dubbed “Jungle, Jeans, Tats and Tees,” (a.k.a. festive animal/island prints, denim, body art and t-shirts), the event is designed to bring great retail and runway straight into the hands of attendees - whether seasoned fashionista or eager newbie.

The creativity does not end on the runway – fashion designers of all skill levels may submit proposals for custom T-shirt and/or jean designs. All submissions will be presented on the Crystal City BID Web site and through digital projection at the event. Audience members will vote on a winner – on Tuesday night, voting for the T-shirt design will take place and on Wednesday, voting for the jean design will occur. Prizes will be awarded.

Local non-profit groups will also be on site to collect donations of new or gently used clothing and footwear. Go Red for Women will also have a presence at the event.

ThisIsSand.com was lauched in may of 2008 and has been a creative and therapeutic way to kill some time and make art online for anyone looking for something a little more interesting than Facebook or Twitter. The site was on the verge on disappearing, but it has just been saved by Finnish online retailer FinnishDesignShop. This makes me happy since June was a bit messy with having to enter one event with a set of credentials, then exit that, walk kind of a long way, find our other credentials, then walk in again...

It has been a while since I have been to the NY MOMA, and I'm sure this will be worth a trip to West 53rd. Last night Johnny Depp among other stars, came out to honor Tim Burton and his show opening this weekend.

"The gallery exhibition is accompanied by a complete retrospective of Burton’s theatrical features and shorts, as well as a lavishly illustrated publication."

I've followed her work on my small local paper, the Washington Post for a while and last Friday at an appearance at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Robin Givhan was true to her character when commenting on the actor turned designer trend:

"I can’t imagine Donna Karan saying I’m going to cut an album because her friends say she can sing karaoke"

She also noted that though most of these ventures are not doing so well, the trend exists because people will always buy things associated with celebrities.

eBay has just launched The Inside Source, an online magazine focused on interior decor, home & garden and fashion. Though the eBay has always had a bit (or too much) of everything, it seems that with the Inside Source, they are trying to reach people who are looking for vintage, high-end, trendy items, but haven't thought of eBay as a legitimate place for that. Since we've had luck with eBay in the past, I like the idea, but after roaming around the site a bit, we found it a little redundant and confusing, but we'll keep an open mind since all new things take a little time to work itself out.

At the time of the Ungaro show, Lindsay Lohan and Estrella Archs received a lot of criticism for their collaborative collection. And though much of it might have been due to the heart-shaped pasties and uninspired designs, now that mister Emanuel Ungaro himself has finally voiced his opinion, it is pretty clear that the choice of the tabloid disaster as a style advisor wasn't the wisest for the fashion house:

"Lindsay Lohan's collaboration was a disaster. I am furious but I can't do anything about it…. [My vision] is in the process of losing its soul…That happens to a lot of designers. We were the creators and patrons, responsible for the creation and destiny of our houses. But when we gave up our houses, we gave up our souls."

Emanuel Ungaro sold his house back in 2005 and I'm sure it must hurt to see it going so far from his original vision.

Project Runway Steam

I looove me some Project Runway and of course I have been watching the latest season in it's new home, Lifetime, but I after last night's episode it's time to let off some steam.
I'm okay with the fact that this season, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors have been consistently absent. I'm okay with the new pointless Models of the Runway ploy to keep me home for an extra half hour (though it's not really working). I'm even okay with the fact that they're only giving the designers an hour to complete the challenges.
What I'm not okay with, is the most boring collection on top 6 designers in Project Runway history. Can we please see some COLOR!?! And while this season was devoid of any real excitement from the beginning, the people who would have given us something to look forward to (Epperson, Melvin, Ra'mon) were all booted way too early.
I'm not okay with with the collection of random judges we get to see each week (Rachel Bilson?).
And I'm really not okay with the fashion school homework assignment "challenges". Here's some money, go to Mood and do whatever you want isn't really motivating to the already less than eager personalities on the show.

And though most of them would look great on Joan Crawford and any spy movie, there are a lot of ways to bring that romance into your fall looks.

Wow! There is no other word to describe what Alexander McQueen sent his models in down the runway for Spring/Summer 2010. If these shoes are what we will be wearing next season, then I'm in. Though walking around in 10 inches of platform may sound a little daunting, these are the kind of "it's so crazy it just might work" kind of look. When I wasn't looking down at their feet, the clothes were pretty awesome too.

I know it might already be getting a little cold for this, but I love the blazer and shorts look. I personally prefer it with flats since short shorts and heels can be a bit much for me. With this look anything goes, so pair a serious structured blazer with bright shorts, accessories, some cool flats, and leggings and you can really go from day to night no matter where you're going.
My inspiration for this today was watching one of my favorites, Isaac Mizrahi, doing one of his webisodes. Click here to watch him talk about blazers and shorts. And check out below a great outfit that fits this look.

I am still talking about the Spring/Summer shows from Brazil because now that all the New York, Milan, and Paris shows are done, the editorial world finally have Spring/Summer in mind so here is my latest obsession:
I've been really loving what I've seen from Isabela Capeto, she's worked for some great Brazilian names like Maria Bonita Extra and Lenny, but since coming out on her own, she's really surprised. Her style is simple, with great interesting shapes and prints. I'm not one to compare designers, but I think she could be the Marc Jacobs of Brazil, but spicier. Let me know what you think.

So I have been seeing a lot of one shoulder dresses transitioning from Spring to Fall which I love, but one thing that has not transitioned so well were all the wonderful colors we saw in Spring. I love a little LBD as much as anybody, but try something new this fall: a bright colored one-shoulder dress. As always, if you want to do a more subdued look for colder weather, pair it with thick warm leggings, over-the-knee boots and still look like a flower when all the leaves are falling.

It's pretty chili out there today so I know that Fall has definitely arrived... I'll be sharing my favorite trends for fall and I had to start with this one:
The White Shirt - Sounds simple enough, but find a white shirt that brings some excitement to an outfit. I love puff sleeves or pleats. Wear it with a fitted trouser or a pencil skirt and look super sleek. Mix it with colors and accessories and make it cool.

Anna Marcolina's laid back style and super soft comfortable fabrics are very reflective of the area in Brazil where they come from. As always, I was super excited for the Redley summer 2010 show, first because it's a chance to see some menswear which I rarely do and secondly because they always plan something beautiful and organic with their shows. This season was no different since we got to see a whole bunch of deconstruction, organic fabrics and nature inspired colors and prints.
I've always really admired Redley for elevating the idea of surfwear to something stylish, cool and even elegant. I also love the idea that the looks can transition from the office to a night out or the day-to-day.
This is what we should all be wearing to a day at the beach!

It's Cantão World for Summer

I know it's a bit difficult to think of next summer when we're just about to enter fall and winter, but for those of us who are used to the idea that the Southern Hemisphere gets to surf on Christmas day, or are lucky enough to "winter" in South America, here is some of what we'll all be wearing when the sun comes out again.
When I saw Cantão's summer 2009/2010 at this year's Fashion Rio I was instantly taken to the Little Big Island that was the show's theme and as they put it:

The women of Cantão value creativity and the ability to manually create what she wears. The loose silhouette attains mooring techniques, intertwining that allows adjustments to the body, overlapping layers and sophisticated patchworks of different materials such as linen, silk voile and lace. Cuts in different directions of the threading, appliqués, macramé and tresse - also used in sandals, are other features composing the crafty characteristics of the collection, as are the floral prints that seem to have been hand drawn by women.

Rio's Time for Fashion
